Southeast Georgia Health System - Camden Campus
Located in St. Marys, Georgia, the Camden Campus of Southeast Georgia Medical Center is the leading acute care hospital serving Camden and Charlton counties in Georgia, as well as Nassau County in Florida. In an effort to better serve the needs of its growing communities, Southeast Georgia Health System (SGHS) initiated the most ambitious medical construction project ever undertaken in Camden County.
In the summer of 2004, SGHS engaged a prominent, Nashville-based architectural firm and a leading, national construction company for the expansion and renovation of its Camden Campus. Concerns began to soon arise over the escalating cost estimates of the project. In December of 2004, SGHS asked HBE to provide an alternative design solution. On February 8, 2005, HBE presented a radically altered design that was more compatible with the existing hospital, and met or exceeded every key planning element and clinical initiative. In response to SGHS' need to provide a contemporary obstetrics service to its communities (which includes thousands of young families at the nearby Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base), HBE's design included a new and expanded, state-of-the-art OB unit - a program element that was not addressed by the architect's original plan.
Although SGHS recognized the value in HBE's more efficient design and Guaranteed Lump Sum price, the System felt compelled to move forward with the current architect and CM given its prior financial commitment. However, on January 26, 2006, after the GMP had come in millions of dollars over the CON threshold; SGHS once again called HBE. Working very closely with the Chief Administrator of the hospital and with the support of the CEO at SGHS, HBE delivered the program, quality and price that the System had been seeking from the start.
HBE was awarded the SGHS project on May 29, 2006, broke ground on January, 23, 2007 and completed the new addition on February 19, 2009. Alterations to the existing hospital commenced immediately.
The HBE design includes 90,927 square feet of new construction and 24,250 square feet of renovation. A new two-story addition houses a new Emergency Department and expanded Surgery Department with four Operating Rooms, a new Outpatient Services Department and a new Imaging Department and a Cardiopulmonary Department. On the second floor, the new Maternity Care Center provides 12 integrated LDRP suites, two ante-partum rooms and two fully-equipped Cesarean-section suites. A new 23-bed medical surgical unit with all private rooms and a six-bed intensive care unit are also provided. Renovation of the existing hospital facilities includes expansion of the laboratory, pharmacy, cafeteria and several support service departments.
