Designed and built by HBE, the 98-bed University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in Seneca, Pennsylvania provides a highly efficient and aesthetically appealing environment that meets the needs of patients, staff and visitors.
A full-service replacement hospital, UPMC was designed to promote ease of patient flow and highly efficient departmental adjacencies. Pre-admission testing and admitting are immediately accessible from the hospital’s centrally located 2-story lobby. Nursing stations are grouped around 16-bed pods and separated by glass walls to permit easy patient observation. Physical therapy is centrally located to offer convenient access for orthopedic surgery patients.
Comfort-enhancing amenities include an exterior dining patio, an outdoor roof terrace and a medical library with an outside patio for use by patients, staff and visitors. All patient rooms overlook landscaped patios and other green areas. In addition, the glass-enclosed lobby promotes an open, spacious environment and includes a built-in coffee bar.
HBE’s design allows for maximum flexibility to support future expansion needs. The entire first floor, which houses diagnostic testing, emergency care, imaging, surgery and OB services, is easily expandable. HBE also designed an inpatient/outpatient psychiatric unit on the site. UPMC’s promotional materials proudly point to the HBE designed and built facility as “visually pleasing buildings and grounds, plentiful free parking, multiple entrances, a convenient outpatient diagnostic center, fast-track emergency care, private rooms, comfortable facilities for visitors, and state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment technology" – all in keeping with UPMC’s focus on efficient delivery of quality care in a patient friendly environment.”
