HBE Designs and Builds First Replacement Hospital in New York in 25 Years.
In May of 2003, Orange Regional Medical Center (ORMC) announced plans to merge Arden Hill Hospital and Horton Medical Center into a new 374-bed hospital in Middletown, New York.
Early on in the planning process, Orange Regional Medical Center (ORMC) recognized that the traditional approach to designing and constructing a replacement hospital (with an architect, engineer and construction manager each having separate contracts) would require funding in excess of ORMC’s $250 million budget.
Within only a few months, under the architect and CM plan, the scope was reduced to 300 beds and project costs soared to $350 million dollars. Already $100 million over budget, ORMC proactively searched for a solution that would maintain their original vision.
ORMC contacted the HBE Corporation. Working within a compressed timeframe, HBE reviewed ORMC’s master plan and provided the hospital with an alternative design and a Guaranteed Lump Sum. The new design increased the scope back to 374 beds, while reducing the cost to $195.5 million. By November of 2005, ORMC’s Board of Directors unanimously approved to move forward with the HBE plan.
The new $195.5 million project is currently under construction on a 61-acre site at East Main Street in the town of Wallkill near the Route 17 interchange at exit 122. This will be the first new hospital built in the region in decades. Features of the new 621,000 square foot hospital include 374 beds, all private rooms, masonry brick exterior and premium equipment and furnishings.
